Redwood Llamas has been raising & packing with llamas since 1984 and has been a commercial outfitter for the last 21 seasons. They offer a variety of ways for you to enjoy the back country:

Redwood Llamas, located in the historic mining town of Silverton, Colorado, operates in the beautiful San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado under a permit of the San Juan National Forest. Our season runs from June through September. July and August are springtime in the Rockies, blanketed with wildflowers of vibrant colors. September brings on fall when the Aspens turn a vivid gold color, a short but incredible season.
 

For those with experience, llamas can be leased to enhance your enjoyment of the mountains. They do the heavy-lifting while you experience the wonders of the exquisite range.

Leading our full-service pack trips are our experienced guides . The head guides for Redwood Llamas, Bill Redwood and Mark Pommier have years of experience having explored the San Juan Mountains since the 1980's and have a vast knowledge of the regions back country. Bill and Mark met in 1990 while competing in llama performance events and have been a team ever since training all of the llamas in their pack string. Mark is a special education teacher and coach in the off season, and was a factory mountain bike rider for Fischer Bicycles and also a completive mountain runner. Bill is owner operator of Redwood Llamas. He hauled the gear in for the volunteer built Colorado Trail and was the outfitter for the BBC Documentary on the Weminuche  Wilderness. Redwood Llamas ,has had articles written in Sports Illustrated, Backpacker Magazine, and Southwest Fly Fishing Magazine. Our goal is to provide you with a memorable, safe vacation, free of stress, and to expose you to what we feel are the best mountains in the Rocky Mountain Region.

Our scheduled 4-6 day trips are conducted with small groups of 6-10 people. Our hikes lead us through historic gold mine areas, old trails into "cities of gold" and connect with the volunteer built "Colorado Trail." Along the way are beautiful lush green valleys where elk and deer abound. There are times when we are above timberline with a 360-degree view of many of Colorado's highest peaks. We drop down into areas with many lakes and streams.
 
As you hike with this well trained pack animal the llama soon becomes a hiking companion. His history comes from the Inca Empire where he has inherited the trait of the "beast of burden" in the Andes of Peru and Bolivia .
 
Easy-going and agile, their padded feet and browsing for food make them a natural for and environmentally sound pack animal. The llamas are calm hard -working animals, making them easy to handle on the trail.
 
Llamas are a great way to lessen the strain of hiking. It should be noted that the terrain and weather could still make it necessary to be prepared physically. Any medical problems should be acknowledged ahead of time.
 
A llama can carry 75-100 pounds with incredible sure footedness and stability through mountain terrain. A curious and gentle nature makes the llama the perfect pack partner.
